Bus operator SBS Transit said it was expecting delivery of 1,000 buses from as early as January 2013.

Comprising 450 single-deck Mercedes Citaro buses and 550 double-deck Volvo B9TL Wright buses, the purchase cost SBS Transit S$433 million.

The purchase will bring SBS' total fleet size to about 3,400, the largest number to date.

Of the 1,000 new buses, 260 will be funded by the government under the Bus Services Enhancement Programme (BSEP), while SBS Transit will fund the remaining 740 buses under its growth and fleet replacement plans.

All the new buses are powered by Euro 5-compliant engines and will have wheelchair-friendly features.
