The People's Association's (PA) Women's Integration Network (WIN) Council announced today that they have successfully raised $10,000 for disadvantaged women to attend Zumba dance courses.

This is with the aim of encouraging women, as the main caregivers of their families, to take care of their own health by adopting an active lifestyle through platforms such as Zumba.

More importantly, the Council hopes to empower women to help other women in need.

"Zumba can help disadvantaged women to make friends and feel a sense of belonging to the community," said Dr Amy Khor, advisor to WIN Council and Minister of State for Health.

Zumba was chosen as the dance fitness program has proven to be a popular among ladies, with 3,779 participants signing up for Zumba courses organised by community centres and clubs since November 2011.

The Council intends to grow a Zumba dance community with 40 interest groups reaching out to about 2,000 women by end-2013.

To kick-start the effort, the Council will organise the largest Zumba party in Singapore for women titled 'Women Celebrate National Day - One Heart, One PAssion Zumba, One Singapore."

The event, which will see 1,000 female participants from all walks of life, will be held on August 5 this year.
