Singapore's Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu began their Olympic women's table tennis singles campaign in winning style on Sunday night.

Feng beat Taiwan's Chen Szu Yu 4-1 in the third round, while Wang ousted Frenchwoman Xian Yifang 4-0.

Earlier in the men's singles, Singapore's Yang Zi was dumped out in Round 2 by the lower-ranked Paul Drinkhall of Britain.

Roared on by the home crowd, the world No 107 scored a stunning 4-1 upset win over the Singaporean, who is 54th in the world.

Feng will take on Germany's Wu Jiaduo in the round of 16 on Monday, while Wang will meet Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus.

Singapore's male paddler Gao Ning plays Slovenia's Bojan Tokic in Round 3.
