Four foreigners arrested for pickpocketing at MRT stations in Singapore

On 18 July 2012 , Police arrested four male Chinese nationals aged between 28 and 34 for involvement in a series of theft offences reported at MRT stations islandwide.

Since early July 2012, several cases of theft from persons were reported within the vicinity of MRT stations in the jurisdiction of Bedok, Central and Tanglin Police Divisions.

An extensive probe involving officers from Police Intelligence Department (PID); Public Transport Security Command (Transcom) and officers from the Divisions concerned was conducted to identify the culprits concerned.

On 18 July 2012 , the identities of two male suspects were established and they were found loitering suspiciously in the vicinity of Dhoby Ghaut MRT. While under observation, one of them was seen stealing a wallet from an unsuspecting female commuter’s handbag before going through the contents with the other suspect. The officers immediately moved in to arrest the duo and recovered the stolen items.

Through follow-up actions, two other accomplices were subsequently arrested in Aljunied. A bag containing two stolen mobile phones were found in their possession and seized as case exhibits.

The four suspects will be charged in Court on 20 July 2012 for offence of Theft with Common Intention under Section 379 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, they face a jail term of up to 3 years or fine or both.
