Large crowds are expected at the Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar, held from 20 July 2012 to 18 August 2012. Police would like to advise the public to remain vigilant against crime as they go about celebrating the festive season.

Shopping at Crowded Areas

While looking out for a good buy, shoppers should take note of the following crime prevention tips:

  1. Never leave your handbag or wallet unattended in public places such as on a table at eateries or in a shopping trolley;
  2. Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you;
  3. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you;
  4. Do not adorn your children with excessive gold jewellery as they are easy targets for potential criminals; and
  5. Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket and always remember to sling your handbag in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times.

Revellers and shoppers are also to be wary of opportunists who might commit molest in crowds. Most of these molest cases happen in crowded areas where the suspect would touch the victim and move away.

  1. The public can minimise opportunities for criminals to commit molest by following these tips:
  2. Be alert and attentive to your surroundings. When possible, move away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to you;
  3. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to the nearest open business premises, crowded area or call the Police to seek help;
  4. Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places; and
  5. If you are molested, call for help immediately by shouting, seek help from people nearby or activate a shrill alarm to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit early. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible.

Victims should call the Police at ‘999’ or make a report at the nearest Police station.

Heavy vehicular traffic is also expected along Changi Road and Sims Ave daily from 6.00 pm onwards. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution.

Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists. Illegal parking along the main and arterial roads will be strictly enforced. Vehicles found parking indiscriminately or causing obstruction will be towed away.
