A family's joy of moving into their new home in Jalan Permas 2/2 in Permas Jaya, here, turned to tragedy when fire destroyed their double-storey house, killing a 2-year-old boy.
Muhammad Aminuddin Mohamad Nor Idris was trapped in a room on the top floor when fire broke out at 9.10am yesterday.
His mother, Nor Nadiah Abu Samah, 25, could only cry in vain when her youngest son called out for her several times before he went silent.
She could not find him as the room was engulfed in thick black smoke.
"I had just taken my bath and was downstairs when I heard my youngest son call out to me several times.
"I rushed upstairs and was shocked to see thick smoke.
"I could only call out his name but there was no answer," the housewife said.
Nor Nadiah said she even tried to use the light from her mobile phone but to no avail.
She then took her two other children, son Muhammad Amirul Hakim, 6, and daughter Nur Aisyah Nadirah, 4, out of the house before returning with neighbours to try and rescue Amin.
"We could not do anything as the smoke was thick and the fire was raging."
Her husband, Mohamad Nor Idris Ahmad, 29, was at his workplace in the Tenaga Nasional Bhd building in Jalan Yahya Awal near here at the time.
Aminuddin's burnt remains were found later in the room after the fire was put out.
"Aminuddin would have turned 2 on July 19. We were planning to celebrate his birthday.
"He was still recovering from a fractured right arm due to a fall about two weeks ago," Nor Nadiah said, crying.
She said the family had just moved into their house at 8pm on Monday.
They had previously stayed with her in-laws when the house was rented out.
Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Syed Nasir Syed Abu Bakar said the victim was found in his bed.
He also said the fire team had trouble reaching the location due to narrow roads and the haphazard parking in the neighbourhood.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
