Tuesday's AFC U-22 Asian Cup Group E Qualifying Results

Timor Leste 0-1 Japan

Australia 0-0 Singapore

Macau 1-2 Indonesia

Singapore held continental giants Australia to an impressive 0-0 draw on Tuesday in the AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Despite the Australians enjoying the dominant share of possession in the first half, the Lions created the more clear-cut openings, with the first coming in the 14th minute when Faris Ramli saw his effort saved by Aaron Lennox, after some nice passing between Ignatius Ang and Ahmad Suhaimi.

Australia were then reduced to ten men three minutes before the break when captain Terry Antonis was handed his marching orders for an off-the-ball incident, and the numerical advantage allowed Mike Wong's charges to gain the ascendancy in the second half.

However, it was the Australians who created the best chance of the second half when Nick Fitzgerald pounced on a loose ball inside the area and sent an effort towards goal, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Courts Young Lions custodian Syazwan Buhari.

The result also allowed Japan to edge ahead at the top of Group E after they kept up their winning record with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Timor Leste, which came courtesy of Masaya Mastumoto's 24th-minute winner.

In the day's late kickoff, group hosts Indonesia moved ahead of Singapore in third place after beating Macau 2-1. Persija Jakarta forward Hendra Bayauw opened the scoring in the 24th minute before grabbing a second a minute before the break, although Macau gave the Indonesians a nervy second half after pulling one back through Pang Chi Hang in the 63rd minute.
