A man duped his victims into subscribing to mobile phone lines and handing over their smart phones to him in exchange for doing a survey or a loan.
A court heard that Syed Abdul Nazahar Syed Abdul Muhamad, 25, became acquainted with the victims through the Alamak.com.sg chatline. He posed as a woman and obtained their contact numbers.
Subsequently, he would offer them a job to conduct a survey for a fictitious set-up called Singapore Survey System.
He would tell the victims to meet his 'colleague' at a shopping mall.
