A seaman has gone missing in the waters off Tanah Merah.
According to a press release from the Maritime Port and Authority of Singapore (MPA), a crew member of bulk carrier Genco-Rhone was reported missing on Wednesday afternoon.
A joint search and rescue operation involving five MPA and Police Coast Guard (PCG) craft has been ongoing and MPA has issued broadcasts to vessels in the vicinity to stay clear of the area.
The 190-metre long bulk carrier had been anchored about 4 km off the shores of Tanah Merah when the man was discovered to be missing.
Yahoo! Singapore understands that the cargo for bulk carriers like Genco Rhone are usually iron ore, steam coal and grains. Calls to the carrier’s parent company, New York-based Genco Shipping and Trading Pte Ltd, were not answered yesterday.
PCG is investigating the incident.
