Abandoned newborn baby saved from dog

Alert neighbours saved a wailing baby from being bitten by a stray dog here on Monday night.

Bercham Rukun Tetangga chairman Tan Swee Kong and a neighbour went to check the source of noise coming from a lane next to their homes and saw a dog pulling violently at a plastic bag.

On closer check, the two of them found a baby inside the plastic bag.

They chased the dog away before alerting the police. The 2.7kg abandoned newborn was sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment.

State Health Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who visited the week-old baby yesterday, said the baby was in a stable condition with minor scratches on both legs.

He expressed disappointment that there were still irresponsible people who abandoned their newborn babies.

"This baby is lucky to be found alive. I dread to imagine if the dog had bitten him.

"My advice to these people is to drop their unwanted newborns in a baby hatch in the state, rather than abandoning it," he said, referring to the hatch made available at Ipoh Specialist Hospital.

Dr Mah said after the baby has been cleared of any health problems, he will be placed at the state Welfare Department.

This latest incident brings the total number of abandoned babies found alive in the state to three so far this year.

There were six abandoned babies last year, 10 in 2010, two in 2009 and three in 2008.

Meanwhile, Ipoh district deputy police chief Superintendent Ahmad Tarmizi said the police have yet to make any arrest on the case.
