Tsunami warning issued after 8.9 magnitude earthquake around Indian Ocean

A tsunami warning has been issued following a 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit waters off western Aceh.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, the countries it's advising to be on tsunami watch include, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Some Singaporeans have mentioned on social media websites that they felt the tremors.

20-year-old Melanie Lau told inSing News she felt the tremors at about 4pm. She was inside the Great Eastern Building at Pickering Street.

“I saw some objects moving slightly and we all felt giddy all of a sudden.

My colleagues from my department and I evacuated from our building to open spaces. After we returned to the office, there was an announcement to ensure us that the situation is fine for the moment and asked us to calm down,” she said.

A Singtel staff on holiday in Phuket sent this SMS: "Everyone's evacuating, moving to the high places.Sirens have gone off, all ordered away from beach."

A massive earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale caused a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004, resulting in more than 200,000 people dying.
