Sengkang firefighters share their 'Strongman' training regime

Former male model Mr Muhammad Abdul Alim Jaabar and fellow firefighter Mr Muhammad Bukhary Abu Bakar won the Home Team tag team category of HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge 2012. Find out more about their training regime.

Confidence key to HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge success
In a competition dominated by physical strength and capabilities, soft skills such as confidence will still play an important role.

The HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge is no exception, with stunts such as the Mazda Zoom-Zoom Car Pull, Stamford Tyre Flip and 3M Scotch Log Walk, which require contestants to pull forth these qualities.

The event is divided into five categories: men's, women's, under-20 tag team, Home Team tag team and bodybuilding.

Held at Toa Payoh HDB Hub on 24 March 2012 for the eighth year, the winners for the Home Team tag team category were Mr Muhammad Abdul Alim Jaabar, 26, and Mr Muhammad Bukhary Abu Bakar, 23.

In a past interview with Home Team News ['One man's journey from Manhunt to Strongman'], the firefighter duo from Sengkang Fire Station mentioned that confidence was one of their strengths.

This is fuelled by Mr Alim's prior experience as a model before becoming a full-time firefighter with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Indeed, confidence has helped them to secure their first place win.

They edged out three other teams from the Civil Defence Academy (CDA) and Police Coast Guard (PCG) in the Mazda Zoom-Zoom Car Pull and Stamford Tyre Flip, boosting their overall score to 10 out of 12.

Mr Dedy Irianto, 22, and Mr Mohd Aliff Alfian, 21, from CDA came in second after scoring eight points in total.

DART personnel impressed by duo's dedication to winning
Two days before the competition, Home Team News visited Sengkang Fire Station to get a glimpse of Mr Alim and Mr Bukhary's training regime.

Their team manager, Warrant Officer Jalil Muhaban from Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), was impressed by their effort and dedication.

“The two of them put in a lot of effort in their training,” said WO Jalil, who provided support for Mr Alim and Mr Bukhary's HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge training.

This included guiding them in improving their timings for individual challenges through tips and strategies, giving them the time and resources to train, as well as being there for them when they needed him.

“Even when it's just a training session, they'll put in the same amount of effort and focus as the actual competition,” said Warrant Officer Jalil Muhaban of the duo. PHOTO: Haikal Jamari

A typical training session would see the duo pulling a Red Rhino in place of a Mazda Zoom-Zoom CX-7 car under the watchful eye of WO Jalil.

He would then give them tips to improve their car pulling tactics, such as getting the duo to improve their arm coordination techniques to maximize the force when pulling the car.

Their motivation to do well in the competition makes WO Jalil's efforts in training them worthwhile.

“Even when it's just a training session, they'll put in the same amount of effort and focus as the actual competition.”

“You can even see them training during their off days,” he added.

This is not as easy as it sounds.

Since Mr Alim and Mr Bukhary come from different rotational (ROTA) commands, scheduling a training session can be a challenge as both of them have different off days and have to juggle their own academic and personal commitments.

They solved this by doing their own personal trainings on days they could not meet.
Alas, with the dedication and determination they put in, they have managed to overcome their challenges and emerge as the competition's winners.
