Police use Taser on man with parang at Toa Payoh

A man allegedly wielded a 30cm-long parang and threatened to kill himself near the Toa Payoh Lorong 7 wet market yesterday afternoon before he was arrested by the police.

Stall-holders around Block 21 said they heard the 57-year-old quarrelling with his mother on the third floor of an adjacent block, Block 18, before he was seen with the weapon.

Ms Li, a 22-year-old bakery stall assistant, said: "He came downstairs with a parang and threw his wallet and about S$200 cash in the dustbin. He did not hurt or threaten anyone."

The man, whom witnesses said looked "intoxicated", walked towards Block 20 before returning to the dustbin, where an elderly lady in her 80s, believed to be his mother, was picking up the money and shouting at him to calm down.

When the police arrived, the man lifted his shirt and apparently started using the parang on his stomach. He did not injure himself, however, as the parang was old and rusty.

A food stall assistant, Mr Lim Hai Choo, 40, said the man fell after the police used a Taser on him.

The man, who was brought to a nearby hospital, was arrested for possession of a scheduled weapon and attempted suicide.

Investigations are ongoing.
