Community Games draw over 10,000 participants

The ongoing Community Games movement to bring sports into the heartlands has drawn more than 10,000 participants so far.

Two teams will emerge from each constituency after the qualifying rounds.

The teams will battle it out for top honours in September at the inaugural Singapore National Games.

Seven of the 10 sports are currently under way. Organisers expect the number of residents participating in the Community Games to reach 13,000 to 14,000 when all sports are made available.

But more than just developing an interest in sports among residents, organisers People's Association and the Singapore Sports Council said the games help to promote community bonding.

"It's a very good ... to be able to bond together with the residents here, from HDB, private estates... they really mingle very well," chairman of the Ang Mo Kio GRC Community Games Cluster Sonny Low said.
