Two nabbed in Hougang for suspected loanshark activities

Police have arrested two men for suspected involvement in loanshark activities in separate cases yesterday.

The first took place at about 12.40 pm around Hougang Street 91 where officers were alerted to the harassment when a suspect was caught on CCTV.

Using the footage, officers made their rounds and spotted the 31-year-old suspect at Hougang Avenue 8 some two hours later.

They also found in his possession, loanshark-related items like a can of paint, a marker, a handphone believed to contain debtors' records and a notebook with suspected debtors' addresses.

Preliminary investigations indicate the suspect is believed to have carried out acts of harassment by spraying paint and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on debtors' units in the Hougang housing estate. The items were seized as case exhibits for the purpose of investigations.

In the other case, officers arrested a 43-year-old man at about 4.00 pm near Hougang Central.

Found on him were more than 10 Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and a handphone believed to contain debtors' records. These were seized as case exhibits.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed the suspect is believed to be a debtor-turned-runner who had facilitated the business of a loanshark by carrying out fund transfers.

The first suspect will be charged in court on March 5 for loanshark harassment while investigation against the other suspect is still on-going.
