Government launch plan to combat human trafficking

The Government will be setting up specialised enforcement teams to combat sex and labour trafficking.

It will also train 10,000 police officers over the next four years to identify trafficked persons.

These were some of the measures Minister of State for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin announced this morning at the launch of the National Plan of Action to combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP).

The NPA is a roadmap from 2012 to 2015 to address the problem of TIP, involving various Government agencies.

TIP is a transnational crime, involving the illegal trade of persons for commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour or the trafficking of organs.

More than transporting or harboring persons, it also involves the use of force, coercion or other means for the purpose of exploitation.

While TIP is not a severe problem in Singapore, sex trafficking and signs of labour trafficking-related exploitation do exist, Mr Tan said. Organ trafficking is less prevalent here.
