Father dies in crash while rushing daughter to hospital

In a desperate bid to get his paralysed 12-year-old daughter, who had gone into fits, to Penang Hospital, security guard S. Pandian, 44 drove against the traffic flow. He paid for the gamble with his life.

Instead, his Proton Iswara collided head-on with a van in Jalan Utama in the 4.20pm accident on Thursday.

Pandian succumbed to his injuries at Penang Hospital some three hours after the accident while his wife, K. Shanthi, 42, is in serious condition at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Their daughter Seetha, who is paralysed from the waist down, was on life support at the ICU.

Another daughter P. Sasi-Rekha, 19, who was also in the car, is warded at the same hospital for multiple bodily injuries.

The impact of the collision also saw van driver R. Ramasivam, 33, trapped inside the vehicle for more than 10 minutes before firemen freed him from the wrecked van.

He is said to be in stable condition.

Sasi-Rekha, who had just started working as a waitress at a restaurant on Thursday, said her father was driving fast and lost control of the car.

As she was in a weak condition after the operation to remove her spleen following the accident, doctors said she was not told about the father's death so as not to distress her.

A neighbour, S. Thamarai, who came to visit the family, said Sasi-Rekha's elder sister died from high fever several years ago.
