BPL: Liverpool 3 Everton 0, courtesy of 400-game Captain Fantastic

Super skipper Steven Gerrard marked his 400th league game with a cracking hat-trick as Liverpool sank their Mersey rivals.

Back in the starting line-up after injury, Gerrard completed his treble in stoppage time as Kenny Dalglish’s men ended a run of three straight Premiership defeats.

And it left Everton boss David Moyes, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his appointment this week, still without a win at Anfield.

Gerrard said: "To beat Everton is always special so to get three goals is a little bit extra but I have to give my team-mates a special mention, especially Luis Suarez who put two goals on a plate for me."

Boss Kenny Dalglish said: "For a guy who left school at 15, my vocabulary is not that great. There is no way I could extol the virtues of Steven Gerrard and do him justice. He was fantastic tonight but I think the three other local lads we had were as well. They didn’t do too badly."

Liverpool were desperate to get back to winning ways while in-form Everton were confident enough to start with ex-Ranger Nikica Jelavic – one of six changes – on the bench.

The game got off to a frantic start but it was Liverpool who had the better of the early opportunities.

Liverpool launched a quick attack to claim the lead in 34 minutes. Suarez and Henderson exchanged passes to play in Gerrard, although it was Martin Kelly who took up the charge.

Howard saved Kelly’s low shot but the keeper and Sylvain Distin could only scramble clear as far as Gerrard, who lobbed the ball back over a crowded area into the net from 18 yards.

Denis Stracqualursi had a chance to level as he met a Baines cross with a firm header but Reina was untroubled.

Liverpool doubled their lead six minutes after the restart when Gerrard cracked home his second goal. It was created by Suarez, who was released by Henderson and then allowed to cut in along the right byeline by Distin.

He pulled back, perhaps looking to shoot but Gerrard – showing no discomfort after appearing to hobble down the tunnel at half-time – was on hand just six yards out and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The closing minutes were niggly as Everton’s frustration was obvious but Liverpool still had one last surge.

Suarez raced clear in injury time and casually laid off for Gerrard to complete his hat-trick.

Moyes said: “We gave away three really poor goals. We led to our own downfall but Liverpool scored and we didn’t.”
