Several posts on Facebook entice users to share their personal information on scam sites by claiming to give away free iPad 3s.
The scam not only entices people to share their information online, but also goes a step further by encouraging users to post the links on their social media pages to boost the chances of increasing their points as a “referrer”, thereby increasing their chances of winning the contest.
Once users visit the site and click on the image, they are redirected to another site that requires users to enter their email addresses to join the contest.
To further encourage immediate participation, the site indicates that there are only two spots left. Upon entering their email addresses, users are further redirected to other sites that resemble a legitimate competition, hence increasing the scam’s credibility.
One of the pages requires for users to promote or refer the link by the following ways, making the user fall victim to phishing and becoming a spammer themselves unknowingly by:
- Posting the exact link to social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging (IM) applications, etc.
- Copying the link to users’ own websites or pages.
Other iPad 3 scams include the common survey scam pages that requests for mobile phone numbers and network providers through competitions.
