Two arrested for loanshark harassment in AMK and Tampines

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman in separate loanshark harassment cases.

The woman was arrested on Feb 2 in Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 after a complaint was made by a resident in the area about loanshark harassment.

Officers attending to the case were able to match her description from witnesses and spotted her around the vicinity.

She was placed under arrest after a short interview and the officers retrieved loanshark related paraphernalia from her including a book believed to contain debtors' records.

She also admitted to assisting loansharks by delivering their notes and demanding repayment from debtors.

The man was arrested in separate case in Tampines Street 21 at around 7.30am on Feb 3.

Police officers searched the man who was carrying a sling bag and found in his possession various loanshark harassment relate paraphernalia including a mobile found that is believed to contain various debtors records.

The man was is suspected to be involved in numerous loanshark harassment cases in neighbourhoods such as, Sembawang, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Pasir Ris and Tampines.

His mondus operandi include using locking debtors' gates with bicycle locks, splashing paint and scrawling loanshark graffiti.

The pair will be charged in court on Feb 4 for loanshark harassment.

If found guilty of assisting an illegal moneylender with harassment, the pair can receive a maximum sentence of up five years in prison, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000. The man can is also liable to receiving three and six strokes of the cane.
