Singaporeans accused in bomb plot must face charges in US

The Subordinate Court has ruled in favour of the extradition of four Singaporeans who have been charged in the United States for allegedly smuggling radio parts to Iran for bombs.

The four, Lim Yong Nam, Lim Kow Seng, Benson Hia Soo Gan and Wong Yuh Lan had denied any wrongdoing and had challenged the extradition request from the US, but district judge Chia Wee Kiat rejected arguments that the offenses are not extraditable.

According to an indictment issued in the District of Columbia, the four accused are charged with conspiracy to defraud the US, smuggling, illegal export of goods from the US to Iran, illegal export of defense articles from the US, false statements and obstruction of justice.

The four, who were arrested in Singapore in October, had allegedly duped a Minnesota-based company into selling them 6,000 radio communication devices for use in Singapore. Instead, the equipment was shipped to Iran.

Hossein Larijani, an Iranian, has also been charged by the US with being involved in the conspiracy.
