Policeman Accidentally Shoots Himself In Leg During Chase

A Chicago police officer was injured early Monday when his own gun accidentally discharged, shooting him in the leg, while he was chasing an allegedly armed suspect.

The incident reportedly followed a car chase that began around 1:56 a.m. when a man jumped out of his vehicle and fled during a traffic stop. Officers followed the suspect on foot and recovered the weapon, but someone also drove off in the vehicle, prompting a car chase.

During the nearly six-mile chase that began in Englewood, the suspect's vehicle reportedly crashed into a fence and "slingshot" back at the pursuing officers, causing them to jump out of the way. While dodging the car, one officer's weapon accidentally discharged, firing a shot into his leg.

The officer is in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, officials told the Chicago Sun-Times. Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden told the newspaper that the bullet went through the officer's calf, breaking a bone.
