Man arrested for attempting to bribe police officer

A 49-year-old man attempted to bribe a police officer with $50 in order to secure his release, after he was arrested for possessing a flick knife.

The incident occurred on Feb 11 at about 6.45am. The suspect had entered Singapore through Marina South Pier for transit to Philippines when a flick knife with a blade of 7cm was discovered in his luggage during an x-ray screening.

The suspect was referred to the duty officer,Corporal Muzaffar, at the checkpoint.

While being questioned, the suspect offered cash of $50 to Corporal Muzaffar in return for his release.

Corporal Muzaffar warned the suspect, rejected the bribe and placed him under arrest. Police investigations are ongoing.

Anyone found in Possession of a Scheduled Weapon carries a imprisonment sentence for a term not exceeding five years and shall also be liable for caning with not less than six strokes.

Commander of Central Police Division, Assistant Commissioner Tan Hung Hooi commended the officer for his utmost integrity for turning down the bribe. 'The act bears testament to the high level of integrity in our officers in the Singapore Police Force,' he said.
