He is believed to have been high on methamphetamine.
In the incident at about 10.30pm on Friday night at Kampung Gong Manok in Kuala Besut, the man had punched the mother-of-one several times on the abdomen when she tried to put up a fight.
He also struck the 24-year-old woman on the neck with the sword.
Following a report by the victim, a police team detained the 30-year-old.
Besut police chief Supt Kamaruddin Zakaria said the suspect tested positive for the psychotropic drug.
Earlier, the man, who had been released from prison on Feb 8, had gone to his sister's house and forced her to tell him where their uncle was living.
