Man fined for punching deaf-mute commuter on bus

On April 9, 2011, Chia Boon Teck, 50, had boarded a SBS bus with his wife and 16-year-old daughter along Jurong West.

The victim, Mr Low Koon Huat, 56, later boarded the same bus at Boon Lay market, and sat in front of Chia's daughter.

Chia told the court that he punched Mr Low, a production operator, twice because he was angry with Mr Low for repeatedly turning around to look at his daughter.

Chia smelled strongly of alcohol when the police arrived at the scene.

The  deliveryman was fined $2,000 today for punching a deaf-mute man in the eye twice on board a bus. He was also ordered to pay $300 as compensation to the victim. Chia could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for causing hurt.

During sentencing, a second charge of repeatedly shoving the bus driver was also considered. Chia has previously been convicted for outrange of modesty and insulting modesty.
