Hougang and Sembawang loanshark runners arrested

The police have arrested two men, aged 25 and 34, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases.

The first case took place on Jan 3 at about 11.45am in the the vicinity of Hougang Avenue 9.

The 34-year-old man was arrested after he was found to have assisted the loansharks in their business by opening a bank account and performing fund transfers.

An ATM card and a bank statement was seized from him.

The second case took place on the same day at about 4.45pm in the vicinity of Sembawang Drive.

Police officers approached the 25-year-old man after they had observed him behaving suspiciously. They also noticed that his hands were stained with paint.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had assisted loansharks in their business by preparing items for other runners to use while carrying out harassment activities.

Items that were seized from him include a pen, cans of paint, a mobile phone containing debtors' records, plastic bags, gloves, a screw-driver, and a penknife.

Investigations against both suspects are ongoing.

If guilty, first-time offenders may be fined between $30,000 and $300,000, jailed for up to four years and punished with up to six strokes of the cane.
