Japanese international striker Tadanari Lee is set to sign for Southampton, who are top of the Championship, on a $1.25-million-a-year contract.
26-year-old Lee, who currently plays for Sanfrecce Hiroshima, would join the side on a two-and-a-half-year contract with an annual salary of 800,000 pounds ($1.25 million), almost double what he earns with Hiroshima.
If Southampton get promoted to the Premier League this season, Lee's pay will shoot up to 1.2 million pounds.
