5 charged with kidnap, murder of S'porean in JB

Five men, including a father and son, were charged in a magistrate’s court with kidnapping and murdering a Singaporean businessman last November.

The accused were Ninja Abdul Latif, 22, his father Abdul Latif Ahmad, 53, both mechanics, and unemployed trio Khairul Halmie Mohd Azmi, 23, P. Vikneswaran, 25, and Ngu Lai Hoo, 38.

They were accused of kidnapping Mr Sim Chee Yong, 56, with the intention of getting a ransom of RM800,000 (S$330,000) at Jalan Tun Abdul Razak on Nov 26 last year.

The offence carries a death sentence or life imprisonment and caning.

All five were also charged with murdering Mr Sim at the Sungai Kong Kong estuary in Masai, a town in east Johor Baru, on Nov 30 last year.

They face a mandatory death sentence if convicted of murder.

Several other accomplices are still at large.

The case will be mentioned again on March 1, pending chemical and forensic reports.

The body of Mr Sim, whose head was covered with plastic bags, was found along the banks of Sungai Kong Kong on Dec 1 last year, four days after his wife first received a call demanding money for his release.
