Assistant manager posed as CPIB officer to cheat man of S$9,000

SINGAPORE: Fong Wei Yang, 23, an assistant manager at McDonald's, has been sentenced to jail for posing as a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CIPB) officer and a monk to cheat a man of S$9,000.
http://www.straitstimes.com/STI/STIMEDIA/image/20110321/stfong-21.jpg
Posing as a CPIB officer, Fong together with one Thuraisamy Senthi had duped 47-year-old Koh Gan Pore into handing over the money on five separate occasions in September 2009.

Mr Koh, a former senior technical officer attached to Tuas South incineration plant, had earlier been accused of collecting bribes from contractors in the facility. He committed suicide later that year.

They also attempted to cheat Mohamad Santosa Suratim, who had also been accused of accepting bribes at the incineration plant,
of S$10,000. However, he did not fall for the ruse.

Other than posing as a CPIB officer, Fong also pretended to be a monk from the Loyang Tua Pek Kong temple and fooled Mr Koh into handing over a supposed donation of S$1,000.

Fong Wei Yang will spend 14 weeks behind bars. Thuraisamy's pre-trial conference will be held next Thursday.

Battling bicycle thieves

SINGAPORE - Bicycle thefts - the No 1 scourge of cyclists here - could soon become a thing of the past.

Tampines GRC yesterday became the first constituency to launch high security labels for bicycles - and the programme will be rolled out by the police and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) to other constituencies in phases from May.

NCPC chairman Tan Kian Hoon said: "The NCPC is always looking at different ways to stop preventable crimes. As the bicycle population increases in Singapore, it is timely that we have a more proactive approach to tackling bike theft. By giving bicycles a unique identity, it would make it harder for thieves to use their stolen bikes openly."

More volunteers "prepared for death" at Fukushima

OSAKA - In the scramble to avert catastrophe at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, selfless workers are volunteering to repeatedly endure high doses of radiation for the sake of millions of people.
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/imagegallery/store/php916srM.jpg
Even if the engineers succeed in restoring power to the plant, crippled by a giant earthquake and tsunami, they have risked permanent health damage. On Friday, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the workers were "prepared for death".

But they have nevertheless raised their hands to return into a hellish, toxic environment to hook up power cables, inspect machinery and identify where firefighters should aim powerful hoses to cool reactors.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v411/Velvet_Illusion/Bushido-1.jpg
"I will work until the limit," one technician in his 30s told his employer, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co., an official revealed in a press conference late Sunday.

Another engineer, who works for a TEPCO subsidiary, told the Mainichi daily on Monday: "There might be another explosion, or the radiation level may rise. Of course I have the option of refusing -- my family is telling me to do so. It's an extremely hard decision, and I'm sure everyone is thinking that way."

"I am worried of course. We are working in an area exposed to this much high radiation and we're still unsure of what will happen.

Uphill battle for S'pore's Olympic team

SINGAPORE - It was an opportunity missed but no point crying over spilt milk.

That is how Singapore will approach the second-leg of their opening round Olympic qualifier against Yemen at the Al-Ain's Sheikh Khalifa Stadium in the United Arab Emirates tonight (11.45pm, Singapore time) after they lost 2-0 in the first leg on Saturday.

Ready, aim...

Both Avramovic and his skipper Hariss felt the team were unlucky, after dominating much of the first leg at the Sheikh Khalifa Stadium.

"We have to try (for a win). We'll attack from the first whistle, like in our first game," national coach Radojko Avramovic told MediaCorp in a phone interview from Al-Ain yesterday.

Captain Hariss Harun added: "We brought this pressure on ourselves, so we must face it. At this level, we'll face it anyway. It's about handling the pressure."

Man detained for spreading radiation rumours

HANGZHOU - POLICE in Hangzhou city, the capital of East China's Zhejiang province, detained a man on Sunday who spread rumours on the Internet, saying radiation from an exploded nuclear power plant has polluted the sea off the eastern Shandong province.

The man, surnamed Chen, is to be held in custody for 10 days and fined 500 yuan (S$97), said a spokesman with the Xihu branch of the Hangzhou city Public Security Bureau.

Chen said he learned of the false information when chatting with a friend on the Internet.

SM Goh: S'pore will have enough water

SINGAPORE will have enough water for itself even if there is no new water agreement after the second water agreement with Malaysia expires in 2061, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

http://news.asiaone.com/A1MEDIA/news/03Mar11/others/20110321.093704_water.jpg

During an event at Marina Barrage to mark World Water Day 2011 yesterday, Mr Goh said Singapore is today "much less dependent" on Malaysia, from which it imports water.

Mr Goh said: "Besides imported water from Malaysia, we have water from local catchments, Newater and desalinated water. We will continue to expand the water supply to meet the needs of our population and growing economy."

S'pore can learn from crisis response in Australia, Japan

SINGAPORE - The Republic can learn from the way people in Japan and Australia responded during crises, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said yesterday.

He noted that the way the communities helped each other, and their determination to rebuild their lives, serve as an inspiration for Singaporeans.

Mr Teo said: "If you look at what's happened in Japan during the crisis, the way they've come together to help each other is really quite tremendous. It shows the strength of the community spirit, and this has to be built up over a period of time."

Mr Teo was speaking at the launch - held in Serangoon - of a nation-wide emergency preparedness programme specially for private estates.

In the next five years, some 55,000 households in private estates - or about 20 per cent of all private households units in the country - are expected to be put through the programme, which is coordinated by the People's Association (PA).
http://www.jhpblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/p1_united_we_stand3.jpg
Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Hwee Hua, who is also the adviser to Serangoon grassroots organisations, said: "The whole idea is to get people to think beyond themselves... we all run very busy lives these days, so unless we all put in an effort to know each other and to see that there can be larger interests to be served, it's going to always be a challenge."

The PA aims to equip one in every three households in Singapore, including those in HDB estates, with emergency skills by 2015.

Liverpool and Chelsea, perfect 20/20
Chelsea's clash with City was a meeting between the two most expensively assembled squads in Premier League history.

For long periods of a scrappy encounter, there was little reason to believe the money had been well spent.

David Luiz however, sunk City with 12 minutes to play at Stamford Bridge and Ramires added a second goal in stoppage time as Carlo Ancelotti's side moved one point ahead of Roberto Mancini's men.

Fernando Torres is now without a goal in seven matches since his British record transfer after the former Liverpool striker was hauled off in the 70th minute.
http://thesoccerroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/luis-suarez.jpg
Liverpool were beaten at Sunderland in dubious circumstances last season when Darren Bent scored with a goal that deflected in off a beachball which had been thrown onto the pitch.

But Kenny Dalglish's side enjoyed their own moment of good fortune at the Stadium of Light this time as Kuyt netted a first half penalty awarded for a tackle by John Mensah that took place outside the area.

Luis Suarez scored Liverpool's second goal from what seemed an impossibly tight angle in the 77th minute to help erase the memory of his team's lacklustre midweek defeat against Braga in the Europa League and lift the Reds within four points of Tottenham.

Mensah's miserable day was completed when the Ghana defender was sent off for a professional foul on Suarez in the closing stages.

Relief efforts backfire on some companies

SINGAPORE - The best of intentions do not always lead to positive publicity, as some companies have found out in the wake of the Japan disaster.
http://s1.hubimg.com/u/1756916_f520.jpg
Microsoft received some flak after it promised to donate a dollar to relief efforts for every re-tweet promoting its search engine Bing - a move which prompted American entertainer Michael Ian Black to send out a strongly-worded tweet to his more than one million followers advising Microsoft against using the tragedy as a marketing opportunity.

In contrast, companies such as Skype, which has offered free credits and voice calls in Japan, received public praise.

Mr Glenn Lim, director at 20twenty Public Relations, noted that companies which come out in support of a cause need to be careful - as even well-intentioned plans, incorrectly executed, could backfire.

Following the Japan earthquake and tsunami, the Singapore unit of Groupon unveiled an initiative to allow Internet users to donate to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) by buying Groupon's coupons in various denominations of S$5, S$10 and S$25 - but saw its sincerity questioned by some netizens.

Groupon Singapore told MediaCorp that its move was not meant to be a publicity effort - which is why its contributions were not made public.
