Seven people, including a 3-year-old boy, were rescued by the SCDF from a flat in Clementi this morning (Mar 21). They were believed to be threatened by a man who was wielding a parang.
It is said that the man has been jobless for a long time and is apparently facing financial difficulties.

The SCDF described their rescue efforts in a statement issued today:
"On 21 March 2011 at 8.02am, the SCDF were alerted to an incident at Blk 706 Clementi West Street 2.
"Upon arrival, the crew set up a lifepak and rescue nets as a precautionary measure.
"SCDF rescued a total of seven persons from three different bedrooms of the unit.
"Amongst those rescued was a boy about 3 years old, who was secured with a safety harness and was brought to safety by a DART rescuer who rappelled down with him.
"SCDF crew pitched ladders at the front and rear bedrooms and assisted the people to descend to safety.
"No one was injured in this incident."
