S'poreans are dumping cars in Johore and fraudulently reporting them as stolen: Tee Siew Kiong

Last week, the Malaysian media had quoted assemblyman Tee Siew Kiong as saying that Singaporeans deliberately "dumped" their cars in Johor and then made fraudulent police reports that their vehicles had been stolen.

"The authorities are investigating the possibility that Singaporeans are using Johor to falsely lodge car theft reports in an attempt to avoid certain fees that are compulsory for vehicle owners in Singapore," said Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman to the Johor State Assembly.

He added that a total of 22 Singapore-registered vehicles were reported stolen in the state between January and November, compared with 20 reports lodged for the whole of last year.

Mr Tee had reportedly said that such incidents - in which Singaporeans would claim insurance when they returned to Singapore - were rampant and created a false impression that many vehicles were being stolen in Johor.

Mr Abdul Ghani also said the Criminal Investigation Department and its Singapore counterpart had agreed to conduct a two-way dialogue twice a year to discuss vehicle-theft issues and share related information, including on arrests.
