S'pore to bid for 2014 Asian Netball Championship

Cyrus Medora, executive director of Netball Singapore, said: "There will be the Asian Championship next year in Sri Lanka, then the following one in 2014. We have bid to host it here in Singapore. There is no one else that has put in a bid yet, so we are quite confident we should get it in 2014."

The competition is held every four years and the last Asian Championship in Malaysia was in 2009. But the Asian Netball Federation is adjusting the dates, so as to use the 2014 edition as the qualifiers for the 2015 Netball World Championships.

Netball Singapore is also keen to get the sport included in the 2015 SEA Games that the republic is hosting. The last time the sport featured in the SEA Games was in 2001, when Singapore won a silver, after losing to host and gold medal winner Malaysia.

Netball Singapore is also looking at better facilities in the future. Its current permanent home in Kallang only has outdoor courts, but a dedicated indoor arena will be a tremendous boost to the sport.
