More calls to ComCare hotline

With more people seeking social assistance in recent years, the ComCare hotline - a government service for the needy - is getting ready to deal with even more calls amid a looming economic downturn.

Statistics provided by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) showed that there had been a 150 per cent jump over the past three years for calls requiring social services. Between January and November, there were already 4,842 of such calls made, due to issues like domestic abuse, gambling and elderly care. During the 2009 economic crisis, calls had also increased by 3,000, or 13 per cent, from the previous year, when the hotline was first introduced.

Minister of State (Community Development, Youth and Sports) Madam Halimah Yacob, said yesterday that the call service needs to be ready for an expected surge in callers and preparations are underway.
