Good Neighbour Awards: 5 neighbours you wish you had

When it rains, those stranded at a bus stop in Jurong West Street 42 need not worry because 66-year-old Madam Yeong Sik Nui is just a telephone call away.

The sprightly mother of one, who has lived in the estate for the past two decades, often shelters her neighbours home with an umbrella during downpours. She also helps residents in their 70s and 80s with their grocery shopping, lugging bags of food to their doorstep.

Madam Yeong's acts of kindness were recently recognised with a Good Neighbour Award, which is jointly organised by HDB and People's Association and supported by the Singapore Kindness Movement and Singapore Press Holdings.

Five national awards were presented in the Open Category, with recipients chosen from almost 1,600 nominations. This is the third time the annual awards were given out to recognise residents who contribute to their estates. Each award recipient received a trophy and $500 worth of NTUC FairPrice vouchers.
