In a statement today, the Subordinate Courts revealed that it needs to expand and is looking to hold an open design competition for the new complex.
The project comprises of a new tower, and modifications of the existing Subordinate Courts building, which houses 40 courtrooms.
Upgrading works for the complex should begin in 2013 and is expected to be completed by 2019.
The new complex will be built as an extension of the current building and will house the criminal courts which are likely to require more space than what the current building can offer.
The Family and Juvenile Courts, located beside the Subordinate Courts, has been gazetted as a national monument, reported local news sources.
After the upgrades and redevelopments, the new Subordinate Courts complex will house the civil courts, and the family and juvenile courts.
The present Family and Juvenile Court building will then be returned to the State.
