Tan Chin Thiam, 66, was also banned from driving for five years. He had pleaded guilty last Friday to causing the death of Mr Ng Lim Hou, 76, and causing hurt to Indonesian maid Jumroh, 25, by committing a negligent act.

Having the right of way, Ms Jumroh, who worked for Mr Ng’s daughter, was helping him across the road at the time of the accident last Dec 27.

Tan was driving his bus when he failed to give way to the two while making a right turn at the cross-junction of Hougang Central and Upper Serangoon Road. Mr Ng was taken to hospital, where he died of a head injury that evening, while Ms Jumroh had superficial injuries.
