Police have arrested two subjects who were involved in cheating more than 90 victims in a series of car rental scams. The victims had responded to newspaper advertisements offering car rental at a discounted price. Deposits for the cars were made to the said subjects but the car rental office was closed on the day of collection and the subjects could not be contacted.
2 Police would like to take this opportunity to encourage members of public to adopt the following measures to avoid becoming a victim to such scam:
- Rent your vehicle from a car rental company only after conducting your due diligence such as checking with Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) whether it is a registered entity, how long the entity had been in business, the cars available at its shop, etc; and
- Insist the rental company provide proper documentation of the car rental details, i.e. deposit, payment, particulars of parties involved and etc.
