Army captain jailed for selling classified data to pay gambling debts

A captain with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) was jailed four months for selling confidential information for $40,400 to a defence contractor.

Phua Poh Sim, 31, a former SAF overseas scholarship recipient who had studied in the prestigious Cambridge University, had used the money to pay off his gambling debts in 2008.

The district court also heard that he would have to pay $200,000 to the SAF on his termination from the army in lieu for failing to complete his bond.

In passing sentence on Friday, District Judge Eugene Teo said: 'The SAF operates on higher values and is driven by a noble mission. Phua had undermined this honourable institution and insulted his brothers-in-arms by 'peddling himself for a price', the judge added. He had pleaded guilty on Wednesday.
