A 42-year-old Chinese man who was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant found himself faced with another charge of attempted bribery.
On 14 August 2011 at about 6.10pm, Senior Station Inspector (SSI) Sudesh Kumar and Sergeant (Sgt) Yap Yhee Hoe from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were conducting anti-crime patrols along Yishun Ring Road when they conducted a search on a man who was spotted behaving suspiciously at the void deck of one of the blocks.
The officers found a S$1,000 note on the man, who was also unable to produce any valid identification document. Suspecting that the man could be an illegal immigrant, the officers proceeded to place him under arrest.
At this juncture, the suspect pleaded to Sgt Yap that if the officers were to let him off, he would give the S$1000 note to both of them. Both officers firmly rejected the offer without hesitation, and warned the suspect against making such an offer as it was an offence to offer a bribe to a public servant.
The suspect was immediately placed under arrest on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant and the S$1000 note was seized as case exhibit.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 16 August 2011 for an offence of unlawful entry into Singapore under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 133 which carries an imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months and shall also be liable to caning with not less than three strokes. The offence of attempted bribery has been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) for follow-up.
