Spurs close to edging Chelsea for "new Drogba"

Tottenham Hotspur have edged ahead of Chelsea in their bid to sign Anderlecht's Romelu Lukaku.

The 17-year old has been compared to Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba, and has been priced at £26million by the Belgian club.

Manager Harry Redknapp cut a frustrated figure as Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko have all only contributed a paltry 11 goals in the Barclays Premier League this season, which has hurt the club's chances of nabbing the all-important UEFA Champions League spot.

The powerful and pacy Lukaku is considered both a sound investment for the present and future. The Lilywhites could look to raise cash to buy him by selling either Pavlyuchenko, Defoe or out-of-favour striker Robbie Keane, who is on loan exile at West Ham.

In addition, the London club are also considering a bid for Lorient forward Kevin Gameiro, who has been on fire for the club, scoring 17 goals in 26 times this season.
