Police have arrested a 46-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a spate of thefts of metal in the vicinity of Yishun Street 22.
On 18 April 2011 at about 11.00pm, Mr Hussin Bin Johari, a member of Nee Soon East Zone 6 NWG and the supervisor of a company engaged by Sembawang Town Council, was informed by one of his workers that someone was trying to steal scrap metal from a rubbish collection centre. Mr Hussin immediately informed his workers to guard the centre while he called the Police.
Mr Hussin and his Bangladeshi workers, namely, Mr Esarul Hoque, Mr Serajul Islam Zillar Rahman, Mr Bilal Saddul and Mr Anjala Absar Ali, managed to locate the suspect in the rubbish collection centre and detained him until the Police arrived. The suspect was found to be carrying a haversack containing metal cutters, pliers, screwdrivers, a hacksaw and pieces of scrap metal.
Preliminary investigations revealed the suspect was believed to be involved in several cases of theft of metal in Yishun. Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.
The offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, is punishable with imprisonment of up to 3 years, or a fine, or both. The offence of Possessing Housebreaking Implements under Section 22(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act, is punishable with imprisonment of up to 2 years.
