A 31-year-old man, from Rochester, Victoria in Australia was one of several passengers in the rear of the ute in the early hours of this morning when he fell from the vehicle as it turned from Maude Road into Nap Nap Road at the town of Maude.
The ute's driver and other passengers did nothing to help him.
But they did stop to pick up cartons of alcohol, which had also fallen from the vehicle, before driving off, police said.
A short time after the ute incident, people in another vehicle tried to help the injured man but emergency services workers could not revive him.
Police want to speak to the people who were travelling in the ute, which has Victorian registration plates QMK 277, dog cages on the rear tray and a spotlight on the roof.
"The registered owner {wasn't necessarily} driving the vehicle, and that's why, if there was anyone at the Maude Hotel and may have seen these people getting into the vehicle, or anyone with an association with this vehicle on this particular evening, to please contact police," NSW Traffic Services commander Joe Cassar told reporters.
It is not known how well the deceased man knew the other passengers in the vehicle, Mr Cassar said.
The incident showed a clear disregard for passenger safety, the road rules or the police's message to drivers during the Easter weekend "to be aware of the people who you have in the car, to drive safely, not to consume alcohol and drive to the conditions".
