Heroes come in small sizes: 7 yr old boy injured while protecting smaller kids against dog

A 7-year-old boy was recovering from severe wounds after he shielded two younger boys from an angry dog Thursday night in Homestead and suffered the brunt of the dog’s attack himself.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the German shepherd-type dog had escaped from a business in the 100 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue, by digging a hole underneath the fence. The said business was closed for the day.

The dog ran across the street to the home where the 7-year-old, his 4-year-old brother and a 4-year-old friend were playing. Their yard had no fence.

The dog attacked.

“Upon seeing the dog attack, the 7-year-old grabbed his brother and his brother’s friend, the other 4-year-old, throwing them underneath a vehicle, and shielding them from the attacking dog,” police spokesman Detective Fernando Morales said. “While he was shielding his little brother and friend, the dog began to maul the 7-year-old.”

The boy’s father heard screams and ran outside. He grabbed a shovel from the back of a truck and struck the dog until it ran away, back to the business across the street.
