Two passers-by stopped an attempted armed robbery in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
At about 2 am, a 19-year-old Chinese male entered a convenience store located at Bukit Merah Central wearing a black coloured cap with a black hooded cardigan over his head.
He brandished a screwdriver at the 30-year-old female cashier and ordered her to open the cash register.
The cashier - who was alone in the convenience story - shouted for help as she retreated to a glass wall behind her. She knocked on it trying to catch the attention of a passer-by.
The teenager immediately ran out of the convenience store. Two members of the public and an off-duty police officer gave chase, managed to detain him and seized the screwdriver.
They handed him over to the police.
The suspect will be charged in court on Monday for the offence of attempted armed robbery.
If convicted, he faces imprisonment for a term not less than 3 years and not more that 14 years, and shall also be liable to caning.
