Three Youths Arrested For Loansharking Activities At Serangoon North

On 22 March 2011 at about 8.11 pm , acting on information received, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded swiftly and detained three 17 year-old youths in the vicinity of Serangoon North Ave 1.

Investigations revealed that the suspects were believed to carried out acts of harassment in Serangoon, Clementi and Tampines by splashing paint and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on walls. Loanshark-related paraphernalia such as cans of paint, markers, handphones, and debtors’ records which were found on them were also seized.

One of the suspects will be charged in Court on 24 March 2011 under the Moneylenders' Act (Revised Edition 2010). Investigations against the other two suspects are ongoing.

First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassments shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
