SINGAPORE - A Temasek polytechnic student has been placed on 2 1/2 years' probation after police found out that he had masterminded a robbery where he pretended to be a victim.

Ruben Chong Yu Shen, 19, had plotted with two other accomplices to rob Lenny Lee Yu Feng, 18.
Gerard Lee Chen Xiang, 18, was sentenced to two years' probation. They will also have to serve 200 hours of community service. The third, Jay Ng Jia Jun, 19, who is serving NS, will be sentenced on Thursday. All are students at the same polytechnic.
The court heard that Chong was giving a lift to Mr Lee, when he stopped and picked up two youths who had asked for directions and then a lift along Punggol Avenue.
Chong pretended not to know his two new passengers. From the rear seat, his two accomplices shouted: "Robbery", and grabbed Mr Lee and Chong by the neck and demanded money.
When Mr Lee could only hand over $60, the robbers 'ordered' Chong to drive to a nearby ATM machine.
Mr Lee was made to reveal his personal identification number to Chong, who then withdrew $2,000 and handed the sum over to the robbers, who then fled from the car.
Mr Lee then went to the police, despite Chong's protests. Investigations subsequently revealed it was a set-up.
