SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - A motorist contacted police late on Tuesday after finding the remains on the F3 motorway, which runs north from Sydney towards the east coast city of Newcastle.

Police recovered several body parts on a 400-metre stretch of the freeway but are still unclear about how they came to be on there.

"It appears, at this stage of the investigation, the body has been run over numerous times," Detective Sergeant Darren Deamer said.

Deamer said it was possible the deceased was the victim of a hit-and-run but they could also have been murdered and the remains dumped on or near the freeway.

"It's an unexplained death, so any hypothesis could be possible," he said.

Police said a post mortem examination will be conducted to identify the deceased and determine a time and cause of death.
