YAKIMA, Wash. — The victim of a vicious stabbing that ended when a Yakima police officer shot and killed the assailant early Sunday suffered 159 stab wounds and underwent open heart surgery, police said this morning during a review of the incident.
The victim, identified by police as Julio Cesar Zamora-Cortes of Yakima, is listed in stable condition at a Yakima hospital, according to Lt. Mike Merryman.
Merryman told a morning news conference an initial review by police show Officer Joel Hansen, 33, acted within procedure when he fired his weapon twice at the assailant.
Police identified the dead man as Yeuri Acevedo Cisneros, 27.
A digital video and audio recording of the assault and the shooting was captured by a recording unit in Hansen’s patrol car.Police described the video as graphic.
The weapon was a folding knife with a four-inch blade.
Merryman said witnesses told officers they tried to stop the assault, including striking Cisneros in the head with a baseball bat.Zamora-Cortes tried to flee his home and got as far as the parking lot where the assault continued until Hansen arrived.
Hansen ordered Cisneros several times to stop stabbing the victim, but he ignored the orders, police said.
Hansen fired two rounds from his weapon, striking Cisneros in the arm and the torso. He died at the scene.
