Ivory Coast police kill 1 and wound 9 in east

Police loyal to Ivory Coast incumbent Laurent Gbagbo raided supporters of his rival, Alassane Ouattara, in the east on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding at least nine, a local charity worker who carried the wounded to hospital said.

"They went to the neighborhood early in the morning and started shooting," he told Reuters by phone, adding that he had helped move the wounded from the scene. "There was one dead, which I saw, and around nine wounded, seven of them by bullets."

He said the dead man was a 24-year-old from the neighborhood whose political affiliation was unknown and that two seriously wounded had been taken to hospital in the main city of Abidjan.

A local representative of Ouattara's party gave a similar account. The police spokesman was not available for comment.
