Interpol Global Complex to be operational by end 2013

SINGAPORE - The new Interpol Global Complex here will drive Interpol's efforts to stay ahead of the challenges of a new generation of policing, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said on Friday.

To be operational by the end of 2013, the complex will strengthen global law enforcement and develop cutting-edge crime-fighting tools and services, the minister said.

Interpol is the world's largest international police force, boasting 188 member countries.

Mr Shanmugam said: "We felt that, by being located in the heart of the embassy belt and city area, the new complex would give Interpol easy access to the international community as well as its local partners."

Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble said that setting up the facility in the Asia-Pacific region reflected Interpol's status as a global entity.

Mr Shanmugam added that Interpol recently launched the Interpol Travel Document to facilitate easy travel between countries for holders of the document.

To support this initiative, Singapore would accord special visa status to such document holders and grant them a multiple-journey visa of up to five years for visa-required nationals who need to travel to Singapore for official Interpol duties on their national passports.
